My Contact Story: The First Prelude
a (non-comprehensive) primer on brain wave states and reality perception
NOTE: I am offering a FREE Intro to ET Contact workshop on Friday, April 25 from 12:00-2:00 pm ET. Sign up here to reserve your spot. REPLAY INCLUDED.
“The type of contact your planet is preparing for is not so much that the extraterrestrials are going to come and land. We are not going to enter your reality that way. That is not what you are preparing for. You are preparing to enter the extraterrestrial reality—or, more specifically, for you and us to enter a common reality.” — Lyssa Royal Holt, channeling Sasha, Preparing for Contact
Hello, Glitch Witches.
Welcome to a new series titled “My Contact Story”. This will be a multi-post series, and this is The First Prelude.
To understand my contact story, you will first need to adjust your perception of what makes something “real.” Or at the very least, you will need to understand my definition of it.
Most of my contact experiences happen in what you could call an alternate state of awareness.
To have an “alternate”, you must first have a “primary”, and our primary state of consciousness in the mainstream paradigm is the beta brain wave state. What we typically experience as “waking” reality, although that’s not quite accurate.
You can be “awake” in alpha, theta, and even gamma brain waves—but these brain waves create what we can call “alternate” or even “altered” states of consciousness.
“Altered states of consciousness” are not some mysterious thing; we’re drifting in and out of them all day long, all the time.
“The beta state is the brain wave state that is dominant when you are awake. The alpha state is the brain wave state that you fall into when you are daydreaming, meditating, fantasizing, and sometimes even watching TV. The delta state is the sleep state. The theta state is the doorway, or the bridge, between alpha and delta.” (Lyssa Royal Holt, Preparing for Contact)
However, humans tend to favor the beta brain wave state as the “primary” or “main” or “most valid” state of reality. Phrases like “it was just a dream” or “it’s all in your head” or “you’re making it up” are reflective of this hierarchical perception of reality.
But we are in and out of altered states all day long—while showering, driving, walking, folding laundry, and of course, drifting in and out of sleep.
As we FALL asleep, we drift through various brain wave states. First we’ll shift from beta to alpha—going into that mellow, daydreamy type space—then into theta (this is known as the “hypnagogic” state), and finally, into delta. Then throughout the sleep cycle, we’ll shift through these states again as we drift from light to deep sleep and back again.
Alright, so what does any of this have to do with CONTACT—and my contact experiences, specifically?
One: We are moving into an era in which science and mysticism are converging. While they have been pitted against each other and presented as foes, in truth, they are allies. They are actually inseparable. Like two sides of the same coin, or rather, two ends of a pole. We might even think of them as an “axis”—similar to the axes in astrology. Distinct, different, each with it’s own unique quality. But utterly inseparable.
Two: Because understanding the scientific foundation for what might be considered “outlandish” or even “preposterous” can actually give your logical and skeptical parts something to chew on—perhaps even feel satisfied by. This can help suspend your disbelief and open you up to possibility.
So, back to my contact experiences. While I continue to experience ongoing subtle and gentle contact all the time (opening to contact means expanding our perception of what contact even is) the paradox is that I have also begun to experience regular and ongoing “dramatic”, overt, and direct contact.
The vast majority of these types of contact experiences happen at night (or on occasion, during the day when I nap), when I am naturally drifting in and out of altered states of consciousness (brain wave states).
Just as the various types of hypnosis I practice utilize altered brain wave states (as does channeling!) to work, we might think of the sleep cycle as a free “quantum hypnosis session” we all have access to every single day—because we naturally and thoroughly experience DEEPLY altered states of consciousness during this time.
Now, this is where I might lose some of you.
This is the point in my contact story where your skeptical and logical self might sneak a “free pass”, so to speak. It’s definitely the point where I “lose” my husband (I say this with deep love and respect).
Chris is exceptionally supportive and encouraging of my work, AND he very skeptical of my ET contact stories.
When I relay my experiences to him, his most common response is: “But were you asleep? Sounds like you had a very vivid dream.”
He is not invalidating me. He is trying to wrap his head around what are admittedly quite outlandish stories.
And the thing is, he’s not entirely wrong.
My contact experiences happen when I am in a dream like state of consciousness. And I am absolutely certain that a bunch of neuroscientists would have logical explanations for what I have experienced.
Vivid dreams. Hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations.
It is not an insult to me that people have trouble believing me about my experiences, or accepting them as “real”—when the truth is they do not happen on what we might call the “beta brain waves” plane of reality.
Because, yes.
My direct contact experiences happen when I am in an altered brain wave state—induced by the natural progression that occurs during the sleep cycle.
But I am very much fully conscious and aware, and these are very much not dreams.
It is quite similar to being in hypnosis, actually. My brain waves are altered due to the natural induction process of the sleep cycle, and yet I simply…become conscious inside that altered state.
It is very different from what we might call a “regular” dream (though I have my own theories about dream reality, this is not the topic for today), and also very different from a lucid dream.
(NOTE: I went into much more depth on this topic in a podcast episode titled “The 3 States of Consciousness for Dream Contact”.)
When contact occurs, I am aware that I’m in my bed (or wherever my physical body happens to be), but because I am in an altered brain wave state, I am able to perceive things I wouldn’t normally be able to in beta.
Next time, in The Second Prelude, we will explore a bit about what these altered brain wave states have to do with ET contact.

I so completely relate to this,Lisa. Only last year I published a 360-page novel, Devin's Dreams, about lucid/vivid dreams, during which "thresholds" appear out of nowhere and my protagonist mysteriously ends up in a different dimension (timespace). Also last year I wrote a poem, "Fireflies", which I invite you to read in my substack page, about a rather personal experience in which I sensed I was actually given an extraordinary opportunity to see with my own eyes an alien landscape.
OK, now you got me dipping my toe in it!
I love brain wave stuff! My partner has a lot of weird experiences during his dreamstate. It's very common for him to become aware within these states, and quite often he can't find a way out.
Whilst my dreams can be really potent too, I've also experienced these powerful states through my breathwork sessions. They mostly emerge as powerful feelings of interconnectedness and interwovenness of realities. My dreams very often show up in the waking world, not exactly the same, but more through thematics. Hell, even Human Design and astrology came to me through a dreamlike/hallucinatory state. At the time I didn't even know what I was seeing. But once I saw it in the waking world, it all made sense.
Excited for the workshop. :)
