Deck: Postcards from the Liminal Space
If you've been following along, you know that the creative theme for this current month is 10 of Pentacles. (Paid subscribers can listen to the full forecast and access the tarot spreads here.)
I pulled a card from Postcards from the Liminal Space (one of my faves) to illuminate the shades of nuance in this invitation.
The card:
Not my monkeys, not my circus
I had to laugh because...well, yeah.
In the audio transmission, I talked about how we're being invited to interweave our creative practice with our daily lives. Our creative expression is not separate from our lives (our to-do list, our obligations, responsibilities, hopes, dreams...)
It is inextricably interwoven with it.
Practically speaking, this might look like choosing to forego working on your project to enjoy happy hour with friends, or working on your project in a spare twenty minutes surrounded by all your kids' toys.
We are meant to live our lives—if we sequester ourselves from the physical world, what is the point of our art?
That said, this doesn't mean you give in to every distraction. It doesn't mean sacrificing all your creative expression in order to show up for every single person who asks you to.
Living in collaboration with your art and weaving your creative expression into the tapestry of your life means it is imperative that you practice discernment.
What is yours? What is not?
Sometimes folding laundry or washing the dishes or cleaning the bathroom is just not as important as nourishing your creative heart.
On that, Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés says:
Note here that Estés says "woman" because it applies within the context of her book (Women Who Run with the Wolves) but this is applicable to every gender, any role.
When is "living your life" avoiding the call of your heart, and when is it part of nourishing yourself?
(Hint: only you get to decide)
In addition to our individual/personal lives, the collective times we are living through are troubling (to say the least.)
When I endlessly consume bad news, without boundary, without discernment, I lose vital energy. I become debilitated by despair and heartache. I become utterly unable to access hope and possibility and wonder—states that, I believe, are vital to—not only the act of creation on a small scale—but those of imagining and creating a new world.
I’m not suggesting we disengage and detach from important matters, matters that need our attention. Instead, I invite you to notice.
Notice what is yours.
Notice when all your consumption weighs you down to the point of being unable to function.
Notice when what you are carrying does not belong to you.
Engagement is crucial.
But so is your calling.
It is my belief that one of the ways we are going to heal this aching world is to access our deep wellspring of hope. Not the kind that bypasses reality, or turns it’s back and ignores the pain. But real, earnest, radical, willing-to-do-whatever-it-takes-to-ease-the-world’s-suffering hope.
It is more imperative than ever that we hold the vision and maintain our focus on creating the prismatic, loving, liberated, joyful, sustainable, nourishing world we believe in
So I invite you to notice where you're overgiving your energy into matters you can’t control. Put boundaries around how much despairing news you're consuming. Set parameters around when, how, where, and why you'll read the news—and from whom.
You shutting down? It’s what they want.
You feeling powerless and hopeless? It’s what they want.
Each of us throwing up our hands and saying “oh well it’s too hard to change any of it, I guess I’ll just numb out and do nothing” is what they want.
You are allowed to say: "This is not mine to carry at this moment"—and set it down.
Use your energy intentionally to craft the very world you know is possible.
So here are your invitations:
Lean all the way into your weird self
Remember that living your life is as important as creating things
Give yourself permission to skip “responsibilities” if your heart is longing to create
Unfollow social media accounts that regularly send you into a spiral of discouragement and despair
Set boundaries around your news consumption (and stick to them)
When you are triggered, feel your feelings—then put on some music: dance, shake, and wiggle it out
