Your alien frequency is a version of you that hasn't been influenced, conditioned, programmed by human rules, constructs, realities, and ways of being.
You could consider your alien self as a metaphor to play with. As an archetypal exploration, your alien self would look around at the world and say, what is happening here? What is this?
Close your eyes and imagine allowing your “alien self” to fill your being. Open your eyes and look around.
What would it be like to see the world around you, to see your life? To see your relationships, your projects through the eyes of someone who had zero context for what they were seeing? With zero preconceived notions about what they were allowed to make, preconceived notions about, who they were allowed to be, preconceived notions about how they were allowed to exist in this world?
That's your alien frequency.
It's the the part of you that isn't limited by the rules of human society, or the rules of the culture, or the rules of the dominant paradigm. It's the part of you that is completely weird, completely wild, completely free and unrestrained and audacious.
What would it would be like to create from this alien frequency? You might feel a bit more freedom. You might not feel limited by things that people have told you that you could do. You might not have false constructs around like what your identity is or what you can make based on your identity.
Embodying your alien frequency allows you to create and make and dream from a truly quantum space, a space where there are no rules and nothing is predetermined. You’re truly just allowed to get wild, wacky, freaky, and weird.
Let's just talk for a second about the notion of Ziggy Stardust. So, Ziggy Stardust, I'm sure you know this, but Ziggy is a persona that David Bowie created to embody on stage and in his music. Something that happened when David did this is that it allowed him to play with his expression on stage. In the book Strange Fascination by David Buckley there are several notable quotes on Ziggy Stardust":
“Ziggy was in part a defense mechanism. It was less scary to play him on stage than be David Bowie.”
“Ziggy started out as an artistic conceit for himself as a writer and performer. Bowie intended to play Ziggy, not become him.”
“Revealingly, by 1973, Bowie was referring to ‘Bowie’ as if it was a media creation, like a fan enthusing about a pop star, not a real person talking about himself. Bowie was an abstract, an idea, not a real person at all. Bowie, like Ziggy, was just another character for David Jones to play."The boundaries between all three were dissolving fast.”
“What started out as an artistic exercise for Bowie, the creation of a plastic rocker who would live out his thrills vicariously on stage for him soon collapsed into confusion for both the singer and his fans. Bowie's audience began to blend the real Bowie with his altar-ego and began reading Bowie as Ziggy. In reality, this tendency was encouraged by Bowie himself.”
“Bowie was attaining rock mythological status by becoming one huge aggregation of real and imagined personalities, as if releasing an alien virus. Bowie had set in train the idea of ‘David Bowie’, a one man collective of media personae changing form and content, rapidly shedding personalities like unwanted shards of skin and inhabiting different terrains of pop music and culture in the process.”
There is power in playing a part as we create and the characters we subtly or perhaps not so subtly embody give us the courage and the audacity to put our magic into the world.
For me, it's often red lipstick. It might seem like a small thing, but in a way I'm embodying specific aspects of my personality. When I wear red lipstick, I more easily embody the parts of me that are more voyeuristic, that demand to be seen, that dare you to look at me. In some ways, red lipstick gives me the courage to embody parts of myself that are more bold and daring and visible and vulnerable.
More of us have ‘Ziggy’ aspects of our personality and embodiment than we realize, and I wonder what power we might harness harness if we were to make those parts of ourselves more conscious? To really play with our archetypal selves instead of subconsciously being played by them?
What if we played with the idea that life itself is theatre—and whether it actually is or not, what happens to our experience when we approach it as such? When we imagine that are gods playing a part—or many parts?
To embody your alien self in your creative process is to allow yourself to create from this part of yourself—and it might even be fun to imagine your alien self as a character. Give it a name, or think about what it looks like. What kinds of clothes does it wear? Does it wear make up? Play with different forms of of physical expression that would help you express how that alien frequency feels to you.
What kinds of art would this alien self make? What kinds of words would it use? What kinds of things would it write?
When you're kind of like playing with this embodiment of this alien persona, you don't have to know where you're going. You don't have to know the next step. Allow yourself to make what you’re feeling in the moment. Let it it to be this weird, wacky embodiment of a strange and undefined part of yourself.
Our card for this month is The Star. When I saw the card, I had a vision of orienting toward true north. In navigation, the North Star is Polaris. The nature of Polaris is fixed. It is instincts. It's anchored in the sky no matter where you are. And by finding that star you find north—and then you know where you are.
Your alien self communicates to you in that same way. Like you don't necessarily need to know what the grandest vision of your life is or what all you're going to create. But by orienting toward the North Star that is your alien self—which is another way of saying the part of you that isn't touched by the limitations of the systems of this physical human reality—you don't have to know exactly what you're doing.
You just make the next decision, and the next—guided by your orientation toward your alien self.
